ASW meets Nneya Richards

- Why do you do what you do?
I love it. Fashion and travel are in my blood. Travel, exploring the world and seeing other cultures has always been a major priority to me; pleasure really. It’s a luxury to be able to do this and to be able to bring my perspective of far flung places to people that might not otherwise have access is just awesome. As a worldly black American woman who can, I feel like it’s my duty to foster that cultural exchange, especially in light of what’s going on in the US right now.
- Where are you right now?
At my apartment in Brooklyn. I’ve been home for the last month! My longest stretch in a loooong time and it’s been quite nice!
- Be honest — what are you wearing?
My Frette bathrobe. Travelling so much does leave you craving some kind of consistency for sanity. So at home, I wear a “hotel robe.” It’s plush and sooo comfortable, I can spend most of my day in it if I don’t have appointments.
- Who’s your hero and who’s your nemesis?
My mom’s my hero. She’s the most selfless person I know. From taking care of me, to her parents, to her family she really puts herself on the backburner and is my biggest cheerleader. My nemesis is every person out there right now that fixes their mouth to say a racial or sexist slur or commit a hate crime because of the climate in the US. Unfortunately, in the words of Drake, “got a lotta enemies” right now.
- What’s your next great adventure?
I know I’m going to Anguilla to check out the The Reef resort in December. But in terms of adventure, the next place is probably going to be Colombia or Tanzania in December / January.
- Where are you happiest?
Happiness for me is definitely a state of mind. I’m happiest when experiencing something completely new or basking in the comforts of home — they probably both trigger the same serotonin levels within me. There are times when I travel and get this amazing combination of old friends in new places, like this summer in Lisbon or experiencing a place that’s like home, like Sayulita, through the eyes of a new friend. That being said my “happy places” are Brooklyn, NY, Sayulita, Mexico and Gallipoli, Italy.
- You get one superpower. What is it? (and why)
Pre-Harry Potter, I would have said flight, post, apparition. Mainly, I just want to save on airfare and cut down travel time. :)
- Words to live by?
My favorite author is F. Scott Fitzgerald. This quote is often misattributed to him. It’s actually by Eric Roth, who wrote the screenplay for The Curious Case of Benjamin Button. Nonetheless it is beautiful written and definitely words to live by. “For what it’s worth… it’s never too late, or in my case too early, to be whoever you want to be. There’s no time limit. Start whenever you want. You can change or stay the same. There are no rules to this thing. We can make the best or the worst of it. I hope you make the best of it. I hope you see things that startle you. I hope you feel things that you never felt before. I hope you meet people who have a different point of view. I hope you live a life you’re proud of, and if you’re not, I hope you have the courage to start all over again.”
- When you’re not working you can be found
Sleeping. My work bleeds into my personal life! But ideally beaching with no service.
- You can meet anyone — dead or alive — who is it and what do you say?
Donald Trump. “Do you mean to tear this country apart? If not, there’s still time…”
- What’s the last thing you do before you go to sleep?Whatsapp with my friends in diff time zones.
